THE EARLY ENAMEL AND GILT DECORATION AND HIGH-RELIEF DÉCOR OF MOSER
Three examples of the very intricately enamelled style of the early enamelled and gilt, and high-relief decoration of Moser dating from the 1880's.
The metals used by Moser in gilding were always the highest quality gold, platinum or silver and were often used in conjunction with each other. Various methods were used to apply the precious metal, to varying degrees of success, dependant on the type of the design or the method of enamelling utilised. 24K gold was often used to gild the rims and in some cases the foot of a vessel and this was very vulnerable to wear especially in frequently used items such as drinking vessels.
Enamelling with High-Relief decoration epitomises the early enamelled Moser production although other factories are known to have experimented with the technique. High-Relief decoration involved the application to the vessel of pre-cast glass shapes that may have already been gilded or could be enamelled along with the rest of the design. The most popular pre-cast elements included acorns, flower petals, birds, fish, insects, reptiles, faceted jewels and grape clusters. Larger high-relief design elements would be built up on the surface of the vessel with successive layers of enamel.
