AMERICAN ART NOUVEAU GLASS ~ LOUIS COMFORT TIFFANY

English Glass American Glass. TOM'sTIFANY

A MUSEUM QUALITY MONUMENTAL AMERICAN TIFFANY STUDIOS PAD CAMEO HAND CARVED FAVRILE GLASS VASE

A truly spectacular original Tiffany Favrile Glass vase, impressive not only for its monumental scale but also for the extremely fine hand carved naturalistic decoration.

A series of white rambling roses are formed from applied hot white cameo glass pads, hand carved to give the delicate details of the petals.
(Please click on the photograph to see a detail of this carving.)

A motif of thorny vines with spikey green leaves hand carved into the iridescent ground, swirls up from the base and is formed from the sparkling green aventurine glass of the base again hand engraved with additional detailing.

The whole of the design stands out against the bright silvery iridescent Favrile Glass body that shades from blue at the base to a green gold at the rim.

This true museum piece is a tour de force showcasing the mastery of technique of the glassblowers of the Tiffany Furnaces and the engravers working in the Tiffany Studios.

A RARE L C TIFFANY FAVRILE MINIATURE HAND BLOWN GLOBULAR 'SALT' DISH

This is the smallest of Tiffany's 'salt' dishes and a very rare example executed in Opal/Vaseline favrile glass.

Hand blown forming a heavy globular shape, these Tiffany Favrile salts always have the added decoration of twisted pulled pigtails to the sides.

This rare example of favrile glass only has the iridescence applied to the interior of the salt. From the outside this gives a lustrous green to the glass while the interior has a stunning peacock blue iridescent surface.

English Glass American Glass. TIFFANY PAIR

A UNIQUELY RARE PAIR OF LOUIS COMFORT TIFFANY FAVRILE TUILIP VASES WITH APPLIED HEART SHAPE LEAF TRAILS

The Louis C Tiffany Favrile glass Tuilip vase is a rare and beautiful object, but even more so when the iridescence is rainbow gold with applied green heart shape leaf trails as displayed on this pair.

It is all the more wonderful to see a pair of these stunning vases. Being hand blown and subject to the natural imprecision of the hand applied trailing, it would be impossible to create a perfectly matching pair, but these were obviously sold by the factory as a pair and have lived together for over a hundred years as their individual registration numbers on the bases are only 10 digits apart.

These hand blown L C Tiffany Favrile tulip vases have knopped stems and applied raised bases.

English Glass American Glass. MERCURY TWO

TWO VERY RARE 'MERCURY GLASS' CASED BLUE PERFUME BOTTLES

Two stunning and rare near perfect 'Mercury Glass' or silvered glass perfume bottles in cased blue glass with hand carving and beautiful white metal (silver) fittings and original glass stoppers.

The clear glass bottles are double walled with the silver mercury deposit trapped between the walls and then the whole of each is cased in blue glass and hand cut back to reveal the silvered interior.

The technique of "mercury glass" was first patented in England in 1849 but production only lasted for four years as the process was very dangerous to the health of the glass blower. Having blown the vessel, the blower then had to suck the molten glass back inside the piece to form the double walls. This was a very dangerous process as the hot air burned and hardened the lungs of the blower. Production was discontinued in England in 1855, but continued to be copied in Bohemia and America for some years.

Mercury glass items are therefor very rare because few were made and the production period was so short. Added to this is the problem that the vessel only remains 'silvered' all the while a vacuum exists between the walls of the vessel. if air manages to enter then the silvering collapses. Perfect examples are therefor very rare and much sought after.

A VERY RARE STOURBRIDGE CAMEO GLASS AUTOMOBILE 'POSY HOLDER' VASE

This cameo glass posy holder is exceptionally rare as it was produced to hold long stemmed flowers such as roses and was fixed to the wall of the passenger compartment of a large auto-mobile at the turn of the last Century.
This was a demonstration of absolute wealth and luxury as the cameo glass posy holder is a rare and expensive form of flower holder probably produced by Stevens and Williams. A very large auto-mobile would be required to be able to accommodate such a tall posy holder (almost 12 inches high) as well as the long stemmed flowers that were intended to be held by it.
