Moser #01

A MONUMENTAL MOSER DEEPLY HAND CUT VASE WITH IRIS AND TULIP DESIGNS

A stunning and truly 'monumental' rectangular shaped Art Deco, Moser vase, deeply hand cut with the classic Moser designs of Irises and Tulips in bloom and bud.

The clear-crystal glass has an inner casing of amethyst that shades from clear at the base to the deepest colour at the rim. The vase is typical of the very deep hand wheel engraving found on perfume bottles and vases with strong geometric external facets that was developed by Moser during the Art Deco period.

This is the largest Moser vase that we have ever seen and it offers a huge surface for working the two most popular Moser designs, the iris and the Tulip, on opposing coners of the striking vase.

Only a limited number of examples are found signed with an engraved script signature to the base and it is thought that perhaps only one piece of a pair, or in a dressing table set, was ever signed.

The Daffodil is a rare Moser motif; wild roses, tulips, day lilies, peonies and irises were the most favoured Moser artistic subjects.

The atomiser's pump mechanism is still working although the metalwork does display wear commensurate with its age.

AN EXCEEDINGLY FINE AND RARE MOSER - KARLSBAD HOT GLASS 'PAD CAMEO' VASE

A unique Moser 'Hot Glass' Pad Cameo vase of 'hyacinth vase' form.

Two hot applied amber 'pads' have been deeply hand carved to form the flower head and bud of a tulip. A hot applied trail in the same colour also forms the stem of the flower. Further deep hand carving has been executed on the clear body of the vessel depicting another flower head on the rear of the vase and art nouveau whiplash style leaves.

The clear body shades to a stunning electric blue and yellow opalescence to the base of the vase. This opalescence reacts dramatically to sunlight or illumination and this is the first time that we have observed this technique used on a Moser vase.

THE EARLY ENAMEL AND GILT DECORATION AND HIGH-RELIEF DÉCOR OF MOSER

Three examples of the very intricately enamelled style of the early enamelled and gilt, and high-relief decoration of Moser dating from the 1880's.

The metals used by Moser in gilding were always the highest quality gold, platinum or silver and were often used in conjunction with each other. Various methods were used to apply the precious metal, to varying degrees of success, dependant on the type of the design or the method of enamelling utilised. 24K gold was often used to gild the rims and in some cases the foot of a vessel and this was very vulnerable to wear especially in frequently used items such as drinking vessels.

Enamelling with High-Relief decoration epitomises the early enamelled Moser production although other factories are known to have experimented with the technique. High-Relief decoration involved the application to the vessel of pre-cast glass shapes that may have already been gilded or could be enamelled along with the rest of the design. The most popular pre-cast elements included acorns, flower petals, birds, fish, insects, reptiles, faceted jewels and grape clusters. Larger high-relief design elements would be built up on the surface of the vessel with successive layers of enamel.

Moser #21

A VERY RARE AND UNUSUAL 'OROPLASTIC' AND CASED BLUE VASE

This is a very rare version of the Moser silver 'oroplastic' technique used on a cased glass vase.

Although Moser patented the 'oropalstic' technique in 1919, other glass manufacturers are known to have copied and developed it which means that the origins of this very rare vase cannot be certain.

The vase has the high quality of a Moser polychromatic oroplastic vase, but the blue base colour has 'intercolor' decoration and has been further treated by an overlay of clear glass. The clear glass has then been hand faceted to produce the final shape. There is no signature on the vase and no glass manufacturer is recorded as producing such an item.

The vase requires further research but the quality is attributable to Moser and this may be a rare experimental piece that did not enter the production inventory.

Moser #22

A RARE MOSER OROPLASTIC DECORATION BOX

This is a rare example of the 'oroplastic' acid cut-back technique patented by Moser in 1919 and used here on a lidded blue glass box.

The oroplastic design was typically used as a frieze round the rim or foot of a vase and heightened with pure or polychromatic gilding but this example differs as it has a large figural medallion in the centre of the box lid and further hand gilding on the edges of each facet.
