Loetz #03

A STUNNING PAIR OF LOETZ CRETE GLATT IRIDESCENT VASES WITH APPLIED JUNGENDSTIL STYLE SILVER DÉCOR

A superb pair of formal cabinet vases by Loetz in the subtle 'Crete Glatt' decor and overlaid with immaculate Sterling Silver floral panels in the Jungendstil style. These are probably the finest pair of silver overlay Loetz vases that we have ever been able to offer. The silver is invariably of a high pure quality as this is easier to work on glass and the silver workmanship on this pair of vases is near perfection.

The Loetz 'Crete Glatt' décor was a very popular and subtle surface finish but was seldom used for the rare and much sought after technique of applied silver decoration. Because the 'Crete Glatt' décor is so subtle there are very delicate and fine variations in the colours of the iridescence as exhibited between the two vases.

This applied silver in formal panels with an intricate floral design is of classic Jungendstil style executed in Bohemia. Normally silver overlay on Loetz vases was applied on blanks shipped to America but this pair with the exquisitely detailed panel designs are much rarer examples produced in Europe.

Loetz #06

A LARGE AND EXCEEDINGLY RARE LOETZ 'SCHAUMGLAS' VASE WITH APPLIED THREADS

The 'Schaumglas' or foam-glass technique of a body of glass with colour (usually white, red or black inclusion) with trapped air bubbles in the décor ~ multiple bubbles as in foam ~ originated late in the Loetz production in 1935.

This is a classic and bold example of the 'Schaumglas' technique, but the rarity of the piece comes from the applied iridescent rods and threads of glass with the pad moulded base that are techniques of Eduard Prochaska from thirty years earlier.

This museum quality vase is almost unique in the Loetz inventory with two such dramatically different techniques from two totally different design periods.

Loetz #17

A LOETZ MINIATURE 'SILBERIRIS' VASE

A rare Loetz miniture vase with an incredibly reflective 'Silberiris' décor in silver-blue, green.

Loetz produced a range of miniatures with virtually all their décors in a variety of shapes and styles and often with applied feet or handles in a contrasting décor.

Sometimes described as 'Salesman Samples', these are rare items but they are too prolific to be only produced as samples. Indeed, LIBERTY & Co on Regent's Street sold Loetz miniatures with cork stoppers in each one as perfume bottles and examples can still be found with a LIBERTY label attached to the bottom of the vase. Doubtless other shops throughout Europe retailed them in similar fashion as miniature vases have always been a popular addition to a collection.

LOETZ IRIDESCENT GLASS VASES WITH SILVER OVERLAY

Loetz #19

A VERY RARE CYTISUS LOETZ VASE OVELAYED WITH SILVER DÉCOR

A classic shaped small Loetz cabinet vase in the rare CYTISUS iridescence overlaid with applied silver décor.

The Loetz CYTISUS décor was a rare iridescence developed in 1900 - 1902 when the Loetz designers were experimenting with numerous new colours and surface finishes. The rich blue ground spotted in silvery blue and rising to a pale peach colouration in the neck of the vase lends itself well to silver overlay décor.

The majority of the applied silver décor found on LOETZ vases was executed in America on vases acquired directly from the Loetz factory. European applied silver work was often of a cubist style while American work was frequently more floral and typically with art nouveau whiplash forms. The silver on this vase is of the highest standard (999 parts to 1000) and bears the American marks of the Alvin Corporation.

Loetz #20

A RARE VESUVIAN LOETZ VASE OVELAYED WITH SILVER DÉCOR

A rare miniature Loetz cabinet vase in the VESUVIAN form with cobalt 'Silberiris' iridescence overlaid with applied silver décor.

The Loetz VESUVIAN form produces a dramatic organic vessel when overlaid with silver. Unusually, this small 'Vesuvian' vase has no other overlay silver work except on the volcanic lava drops which vividly contrast with the deep cobalt blue 'Silberiris' iridescence of the glass.

The heavy silver overlay on this Loetz vase carries an unidentified makers' mark at the neck and the inscription 'STERLING' indicating high quality silver. The silver work was probably executed in America. c 1902

A CANDIA GOLD SILBERIRIS LOETZ VASE WITH APPLIED SILVER DÉCOR

A free form organic Loetz cabinet vase with the 'Candia' gold, 'Silberiris' smooth surface iridescence overlaid with applied silver décor.

The Loetz Candia Silberiris décor was a popular surface finish for the rare and much sought after technique of applied silver decoration.

Some Loetz vases with applied silver décor were executed in Europe but the majority of the work was done in America on vases acquired directly from the Loetz factory. European applied silver work was often of a cubist or geometric style while American work was frequently floral and typically with art nouveau whiplash forms as can be seen in this example.
