Loetz #01

THREE EXCEEDINGLY RARE LOETZ VASES: A LOETZ VASE IN THE VIOLET 'TITANIA' GENRE DÉCOR, A MINIATURE LOETZ PAPILLON VASE FORMED AS A PERFUME BOTTLE FOR 'LIBERTY' AND A RARE SILVER OVERLAY 'SILBERIRIS' VASE.

Loetz #02

A RARE LOETZ 'CANDIA PAPILLON' MINIATURE VASE

This rare miniature LOETZ vase is formed in the incredibly reflective 'Candia Papillon' décor of rainbow gold on a yellow ground.

Some Loetz miniature vases with the addition of simply formed cork stoppers were sold as perfume bottles by the London shop LIBERTY .

Loetz produced a range of miniatures in virtually all their décors and in a variety of shapes and styles. They are much sought after today not only by Loetz glass collectors but also collectors of miniatures in any medium.

Loetz #03

A CANDIA SILBERIRIS LOETZ VASE WITH APPLIED SILVER DÉCOR

A Loetz cabinet vase with flaring rim. The glass is clear bodied 'Candia' green-gold 'Silberiris' smooth surface iridescence overlaid with applied pure silver décor.

The smooth Loetz Candia Silberiris décor was a popular base for the rare and much sought-after technique of applied silver decoration.

Some Loetz vases with applied silver décor were executed in Europe but the majority originate from America on vases acquired directly from the Loetz factory. European applied silver design was often of a cubist or geometric style while American work was frequently floral and typically with art nouveau whiplash forms.

This is an early example of American 'silver overlay Loetz' with the silver marked with a stylised " F" and 'SILVER'. Only the highest grade silver is malleable enough to be worked on glass.

Loetz #04

A LOETZ CANDIA PAPILLON VASE WITH STUNNINGLY INTRICATE APPLIED SILVER DÉCOR

A Loetz cabinet vase with bulbous base and tall body. The glass is clear bodied with 'Candia' blue-gold 'Papillon' surface iridescence overlaid with applied pure silver décor.

The Loetz Candia Papillon décor was the most popular base for the rare and much sought-after technique of applied silver decoration but used here on a clear body it exhibits a beautiful blue -silver - gold 'butterfly wing' iridescence.

The applied silver décor on this vase is of stunning high quality and is the most complicated and intricate work that we have ever seen on a Loetz vase. The pierced floral design finishes as intaglio carving on the rim band. The American silver work is of the purest quality marked '999/1000 FINE SILVER'.

Loetz #05

A SUPERB PAIR OF CRETE PAPILLON LOETZ VASES WITH APPLIED SILVER DÉCOR

A stunning and classic pair of Loetz mould blown cabinet vases in perfect condition. The glass is 'Crete' (green), 'Papillon' (butterfly wing) iridescence with Sterling Silver overlay. The iridescence shades to cobalt blue and gold in the light.
The Loetz Crete Papillon décor lends itself very well to the rare and much sought-after technique of applied silver decoration.

Some Loetz vases with applied silver décor were executed in Europe but the majority originate from America on vases acquired directly from the Loetz factory. European applied silver design was often of a cubist or geometric style while American work was frequently floral and typically with art nouveau whiplash forms as can be seen in these examples. These are typical examples of American 'silver overlay Loetz' vases with the silver on each vase simply marked 'STERLING SILVER'.

Loetz #07

A STUNNING PAIR OF LOETZ CRETE GLATT IRIDESCENT VASES WITH APPLIED JUNGENDSTIL STYLE SILVER DÉCOR

A superb pair of formal cabinet vases by Loetz in the subtle 'Crete Glatt' decor and overlaid with immaculate Sterling Silver floral panels in the Jungendstil style. These are probably the finest pair of silver overlay Loetz vases that we have ever been able to offer. The silver is invariably of a high pure quality as this is easier to work on glass and the silver workmanship on this pair of vases is near perfection.

The Loetz 'Crete Glatt' décor was a very popular and subtle surface finish but was seldom used for the rare and much sought after technique of applied silver decoration. Because the 'Crete Glatt' décor is so subtle there are very delicate and fine variations in the colours of the iridescence as exhibited between the two vases.

This applied silver in formal panels with an intricate floral design is of classic Jungendstil style executed in Bohemia. Normally silver overlay on Loetz vases was applied on blanks shipped to America but this pair with the exquisitely detailed panel designs are much rarer examples produced in Europe.

A LOETZ MINIATURE 'CANDIA PAPILLON' PERFUME BOTTLE MADE FOR 'LIBERTY' OF LONDON

An exceedingly rare Loetz miniature perfume bottle made exclusively for the famous 'LIBERTY' shop in London.

The bottle is formed in an incredibly reflective 'Candia Papillon' décor of rainbow gold on a yellow ground.

Stoppers of perfume bottles made for LIBERTY by Loetz were always simply formed from cork.

'LIBERTY' was renowned for supporting and promoting all the famous Art Nouveau designers and manufacturers and original Loetz perfume bottles made for the exclusive 'grande magasin' are much sought after.
This bottle carries an original 'LIBERTY' label to the base.

Loetz produced a range of miniatures in virtually all their décor's and in a variety of shapes and styles but perfume bottles for LIBERTY are exceedingly rare and always command a high premium.

A LARGE AND EXCEEDINGLY RARE LOETZ 'SCHAUMGLAS' VASE WITH APPLIED THREADS

The 'Schaumglas' or foam-glass technique of a body of glass with colour (usually white, red or black inclusion) with trapped air bubbles in the décor ~ multiple bubbles as in foam ~ originated late in the Loetz production in 1935.

This is a classic and bold example of the 'Schaumglas' technique, but the rarity of the piece comes from the applied iridescent rods and threads of glass with the pad moulded base that are techniques of Eduard Prochaska from thirty years earlier.

This museum quality vase is almost unique in the Loetz inventory with two such dramatically different techniques from two totally different design periods.

Loetz #22

A VERY RARE CYTISUS LOETZ VASE OVELAYED WITH SILVER DÉCOR

A classic shaped small Loetz cabinet vase in the rare CYTISUS iridescence overlaid with applied silver décor.

The Loetz CYTISUS décor was a rare iridescence developed in 1900 - 1902 when the Loetz designers were experimenting with numerous new colours and surface finishes. The rich blue ground spotted in silvery blue and rising to a pale peach colouration in the neck of the vase lends itself well to silver overlay décor.

The majority of the applied silver décor found on LOETZ vases was executed in America on vases acquired directly from the Loetz factory. European applied silver work was often of a cubist style while American work was frequently more floral and typically with art nouveau whiplash forms. The silver on this vase is of the highest standard (999 parts to 1000) and bears the American marks of the Alvin Corporation.

A rare miniature Loetz cabinet vase in the VESUVIAN form with cobalt 'Silberiris' iridescence overlaid with applied silver décor.

The Loetz VESUVIAN form produces a dramatic organic vessel when overlaid with silver. Unusually, this small 'Vesuvian' vase has no other overlay silver work except on the volcanic lava drops which vividly contrast with the deep cobalt blue 'Silberiris' iridescence of the glass.

The heavy silver overlay on this Loetz vase carries an unidentified makers' mark at the neck and the inscription 'STERLING' indicating high quality silver. The silver work was probably executed in America. c 1902
