A GALLE 'TEA CEREMONY' MINIATURE VASE WITH A RARE FOUR COLOUR CAMEO GLASS OVERLAY

The much sought after GALLE 'Tea Ceremony' miniature vase influenced by, and originally intended for, the Japanese market. The unusual and rare use of four colour cameo glass overlays have been used to define the design of Sycamore tree seed pods blowing in the wind.

The ground colour of the vase is frosted clear glass giving a white ground with internal suffusions of red. The seed pod design is in lime green and pale green overlay glass over a bright yellow with a fourth layer of white beneath the three colours which gives white 'shadowing' to the design and makes the colours of the seed pods and leaves opaque.

This is a complicated colour way for a classic Galle design and typically for this colour way, the whole vase has a matt finish.

A VERY RARE, EARLY GALLE ACID ETCHED AND ENAMELLED 'MUFF' BOTTLE

GALLE perfume bottles are hard to find and highly sought after but this is the first example of the much rarer Galle 'Muff' (Cognac) drinking bottle that we have ever seen.

This bottle is one of Galle's earliest entries into glass design and manufacture and was produced before he developed his skills and expertise in Cameo glass production.

The glass body is a clear lime green glass with frosted interior producing an opaque body. The surface of the glass has been acid etched with an intricate design of Daisy flowers, buds and leaves which have then been finely detailed in multicolour enamels and highlighted with gilding.

The cap, collar and cup silver gilt fittings are finely tooled and carved and carry French silver marks.

A VERY RARE COMBINATION OF THE GALLE 'AQUATIC' SCENE ON A CHARMING MINIATURE CAMEO GLASS VASE

This is the first example we have ever seen of the much sought-after Galle cameo glass 'AQUATIC' pond design on a miniature vase.

The clear ground body has internal suffusions of white and aqua-blue to represent clouds over the water of the pond while over this body is a layer of amber cameo glass. The cameo glass has two acid etchings in positive and negative cutting to give the form and details of a GALLE design of water lilies on a pond. The outer cameo surface is then polished to enhance the details of the plants against a satin ground.

This rare design is normally reserved for much larger vases and this may have been an experimental attempt to produce the iconic Galle design on the smallest of his vases. The work was executed 'in memorium' in the year of Galle's death.

The ground colour of the vase is frosted clear glass giving a white ground with internal suffusions of pink. The floral design is in purple and olive green overlay glass but with a third white layer beneath the two colours which gives white 'shadowing' to the design and makes the colours of the flowers and leaves opaque. A MINIATURE 'MOULE SOUFLE' CHRYSANTHEMUM CAMEO GLASS VASE BY GALLE

The 'Moule Soufle' (mould blown) vases of Galle are usually of monumental size as this allows for full use of this relatively rare and expensive technique which works to best advantage with bulbous images such as fruits, especially plums.

This vase is thought to be the smallest example of a 'Moule Soufle' cameo vase where only the central head of the deep crimson cameo Chrysanthemum flower illustrates the technique. The added interest of the contrasting applied handles suggest that these small pieces may have been experimental as both techniques are relatively scarce in the Galle production.

Galle #17

A SUPERB AND RARE, VERY EARLY GALLÉ ETCHED AND MULTICOLOUR ENAMELLED VASE WITH GILDING.

A very rare and early Gallé etched, enamelled and gilded vase with a floral design in multicolours on a soft internally frosted brown ground.

Before GALLÉ became famous and renowned for his work in cameo glass he produced superb and subtle works in marquetry wood and enamelled glass. This superb vase is one of his earliest works and the floral enamelling displays his skill as a botanical artist where all his designs were taken from life. Gallé was immensely influenced by Japanese design and this influence is reflected here as also is his developing interest in the Art Nouveau movement which can be seen in the gilded whiplash 'leaves' of the design.

The ground colour of the vase is a highly polished pale brown with soft frosting to the interior making the vase opaque. Part of the floral design, notably the large leaves, is intaglio acid etched while the multicolour enamelling is in high relief. Gilding enhances the design especially in the whiplash Art Nouveau motifs.

We are very honoured to be able to offer this fine family heirloom. The vase was given as a token of love from a French Soldier to an English lady immediately after the First World War and has remained in the family for almost a century until it was recently offered to us.

AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE AND CHARMING GALLE 'RABBIT' VASE

This is the first time that we have had the honour to acquire an example of the exceedingly rare and charming GALLE designed 'Rabbit under a tree' cabinet vase

The vast majority of Galle cameo glass designs are floral and whereas he included landscapes and insects in his repertoire, depictions of animals are very rare. This whimsical Rabbit is particularly charming and very precisely executed.

The Galle design of a rabbit sitting in the grass under a tree and eating, is executed in pale lime green and olive cameo glass layers on a frosted clear body with no internal colouration. The detailed olive cameo layer has then received a rich polish contrasting with the clear frosted ground. The acid etching of the cameo layers is exceedingly precise and accurate with no overflow or waste.

Galle #20

A FINE GALLE CAMEO GLASS VASE WITH A DESIGN OF A LAKE AND MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPE ON AN OPALESCENT GROUND

One of Galle's more classical vase forms, this shape with a bulbous base and slightly spreading foot suits well his design of a tall tree with mountain landscape receding into the distance with a wooded lakeside in the foreground.

The clear ground glass has a pale yellow opalescence shading from the neck with overlay cameo glass layers in pale blue and deep amethyst. This blue colour was developed by Galle in 1890 and this is one of his most popular and sought after colour ways.

Each cameo glass layer has been subjected to two acid etchings and a polishing to give the details of the design but the pale blue layer of the water in the lake has been cleverly left with a matt finish to suffuse into the yellow of the ground colour.

THE EXCEEDINGLY RARE GALLE 'DRAGONFLY' DESIGN ON A 'SEULE FLEUR' BANJO CAMEO GLASS VASE

The much sought-after and rare 'Dragonfly over a Pond' Galle cameo glass design on a fine 'Seule fleur' Banjo vase.

The clear ground body, frosted to a white colour, is suffused with streaks of pale blue to the neck and centre of the vase giving a hint of mourning mists over the pond. Over this ground is a layer of pale blue cameo glass and an outer layer of pale amethyst each of which has received two acid etched cuttings to give the form and details of the dragonfly and aquatic design. These cameo glass layers are then finished with a polished surface contrasting with the matt ground.

The Dragonfly is one of the rarest and most desirable Art nouveau Galle images. Linked with the ever popular 'Aquatic' pond scene in this stunningly sympathetic and rare 'colour way' of pale blue and translucent amethyst, the result on this Banjo vase is near perfection.
